About the Package
Temple Life
Buddhism has been Thailand’s dominant philosophy for more than two thousand years, with about 95% of the population Buddhist supporting an estimated 27,000 wats (temples) nationwide. Temples are usually located on the outskirts of villages, though the more elaborate ones are found within cities. Symbols of faith, temples have also become sanctuaries providing shelter for the poor, orphaned children, and the elderly, as well as offering primary education and serving as community centers.Bangkok Temples
From several magnificent temples in Bangkok, the three most unique ones are Wat Traimit, Wat Pho, and Wat Benchamabophit. Wat Traimit houses a striking 3-meter tall Golden Buddha image – a gleaming, 5-tonn figure of solid gold. Wat Pho, which features the largest reclining Buddha image in Thailand, and the Chedi of the kings, is Bangkok’s oldest and largest temple. Finally is Wat Benchamabophit, fine modern Thai architecture constructed from white Carrara marble with ornate crossbeams decorated with lacquer and gold.
