About the Package
Vietnam
Vietnam is probably best known for its war with America, but the country has far more than war memorials or the remnants of the battlefields to offer. Now that the current government is opening the country to tourism with great enthusiasm, there is an opportunity to discover the myriad facets of this diverse country. Vietnam comprises 331,689 square kilometers of land mass with a coastline of more than three thousand miles facing the South China Sea.Vietnam is home to nearly 77 million people with Vietnamese as the majority – the rest made up of Chinese and other ethnic groups such as Mon-Khmer, Tai, Meo, Muong, Man and Cham. The official language is Vietnamese while Chinese is the first language in many parts of the country. Nonetheless, don’t be surprised if you find Vietnamese merchants vying to sell souvenirs in French and English. The French colonialism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, left its mark on the arts and architecture in several cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Min, Dalat and Danang. Then of course, there was the war, which planted the seeds of the English language.Hoi An
Hoi An was Vietnam’s important international seaport town from the 16th century to the late 19th century with merchants from both Asia and Europe trading all sorts of goods from spices to gold. The city played the major role in Vietnam’s commerce and civilization and held this position until late 19th century, when the Thu Bon River that linked Hoi An with the sea filled with silt and became too shallow to navigate. Located on the bank of Thu Bon River 30 kilometers south of Danang, this is a quiet riverside town dotted with temples, shrines and Chinese style tile-roofed wooden houses girding a long narrow road.Traditional lifestyle and old harmonius combination of Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese architecture have remained virtually unspoiled since the 17th century. Of all historic structures in Hoi An, the Japanese bridge remains the most famous. Called Lai Vien Kieu in Vietnamese, this red covered bridge has its own temple and guardian statues.
Indeed, it is the slow pace of life that makes this charming town worth a visit. It’s pleasurable enough just to pedal around on a bicycle and stop by restaurants on Trai Phu Street for a cup of tea and Chinese-style pastries.
In 1999, the discovered cargo of a late 15th century Vietnamese shipmwreck at Cu lao Cha`m near Hoi-An was the most important discovery in Southeast Asian ceramic art history. A year later in April, Hoi An was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
