Samui Going Green
5 Dec 2009
The mention of the name “Samui” conjures up images of an idyllic tropical island with beaches lined with thick groves of coconut trees – leaves rustling in the breeze.
Such vivid images of Samui are etched in the minds of all who have made a sun-worshipper’s pilgrimage or sought a tranquil retreat on the island, healing the mind, body and spirit.
Coconut trees have long been the dominant feature of the natural landscape. However, in recent times, the steady pace of development is fast re-shaping the island’s typography. The distinct thinning of these coconut groves is quite evident.
This recent transformation has not escaped the attention of local residents and the changing landscape is a cause for concern among local residents. The island community has thus embarked on a collective effort to reverse this trend and will be hosting the Samui Going Green coconut re-planting mission on December 5th — timed to coincide with nationwide celebrations to mark His Majesty the King’s 82nd birthday and to demonstrate support for the national reforestation efforts advocated by His Majesty the King.
The residents of Samui are inviting visitors from all around to join them in the Samui Going Green coconut re-planting mission in the afternoon of December 5th.
Jointly organized by Samui’s tourism industry stakeholders who are leading the charge on ‘Green Island’ status for Samui and promoting environmental quality, the Samui Going Green coconut re-planting effort on December 5th is being led by the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Surat Thani office, the Samui Tourism Coordination Centre, Samui municipality, the Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association and the Thai Hotels Association Southeastern Chapter.
As part of the December 5th Samui Going Green coconut re-planting mission, participants will help plant a total of 99,999 coconut saplings in homes, schools, hospitals and other establishments throughout Samui island. Thais believe that the number nine bestows good luck. Hence 99,999 is considered to be a very auspicious number.
For individuals wishing to take part in this fun activity, the meeting point is at Na Thon Pier at 13.30 hours (1.30 p.m.) on December 5th. Visitors to the island will be escorted by their Samui hosts.
As part of the activities, there will also be a forum on “Coconuts and Tourism”. Do as the locals do – enjoy a ‘kin kao haw rim lae’ picnic on the beach.
Participants taking part in the coconut re-planting mission on December 5th will be presented with a gift of virgin coconut oil as a token of appreciation for their contribution.
Meeting point: At Na Thon Pier at 13.30 hours.
