The Grand Palace and the Temple of Emerald Buddha The Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha are attractions that are indispensible in your itinerary to Thailand. If you have come to experience the exoticism of the Orient, you'll find it here at its most dramatic. The huge palace compound, which encloses more than 100 halls and buildings, was constructed in 1782 when Rama I, the first king of the ongoing Chakri dynasty established Bangkok as the Capital of Siam.
It is one of the most photogenic places on earth. Golden spires, fierce statues, shining roof tiles and glittering mosaics - - representing some the country's finest and most experimental architecture -- loom from all directions and the effect can be overwhelming.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha adjoins the Grand palace and is the most important spiritual center for the Thai people. The temple houses a green Buddha that was carved from a single piece of fine jade in the 13th or 14th century. THe venerated image sits on a high golden throne surrounded by countless gold ornaments.
One of the more subtle yet most significant features surrounding the temple area is a 178-sectioned hand-painted wall mural depicting the story of the Ramayana, the king's battle against evil. Alongside the fantastic, the paintings include many scenes of everyday life in old Siam.
Homestay at Thai House Make yourself at home and experience the harmonious blending of traditional Thai style and modern living at Thai House. Nestled among tropical fruit trees in a 5-acre charming orchard in Nontaburi and built in traditional style with golden teak, The Thai House consists of three linked houses. In each house, rooms are decorated by intricate carvings on walls and wing-shaped roof and equipped with western-style facilities. Cruising along the Chao Phraya River to a small canal, you will reach The Thai House, where you will be welcomed and treated warmly as a special guest of the family, not just a tourist. The joy of cooking and eating is also the heart of the service. Served on an outer patio, you can enjoy delicious Thai meals while watching picturesque view of the orchard. Thai cooking classes are also available.
Cooking Thai Dishes Interested visitors can gain a tasteful insight and first-hand experience of authentic Thai food, and cooking, at the elegant Thai House in Nonthaburi Province. This genuine Thai-style teakwood mansion is set in a large garden of fruit trees, orchids and fragrant herbs, aside a small canal. The house is raised off the ground and all rooms, including the kitchen, are designed for open-air use.
Lessons begin after a morning stroll around the Thai House with visitors escorted to an open-air kitchen to learn the secrets of Thai culinary art from a professional chef. The class starts with an introduction to Thai herbs and spices, followed by a hands-on demonstration in the preparation of Thai cuisine.
At the end of the course, visitors enjoy a full, five-course Thai meal in peaceful, homely surroundings. During the meal, chef welcomes more discussion on food preparation and cooking. Those who wish to, can explore the surrounds of the Thai House on bicycle or by boat, or simply spend the afternoon lounging around.
