Khao Yai National Park
Khao Yai (Big Mountain) National Park is a paradise for nature lovers from Thailand and around the world. Only 160 km northeast of Bangkok, this preserve is a mountainous evergreen rainforest of about 2,000 square kilometers teeming with rivers, waterfalls and a huge variety of wildlife – both flying and earthbound. Elephants, barking deer, gibbons and even tigers share the habitat with more than 300 bird species, including variations of Trogans, Barbets, Hornbills, Flamebacks, Mynas and many more.
Birdwatchers can spend many happy vigorous days hiking on the forest trails, or just let the birds come to you in an observation tower while you relax with a pair of binoculars and a cool drink.
Kaeng Krachan National Park
Another fabulous spot for bird-watching is just 200 kilometers southwest of Thailand’s capital is Kaeng Krachan National Park. This nature preserve of 300 square kilometers is also mountainous, with a peak of 1,000 meters – all blanketed in broad-leaved evergreens.
Eagles, Owls, Babblers, Woodpeckers, Broadbills – 400 species altogether – are here for you to enjoy. As an added bonus, there is a recently discovered population of Ratchet-tailed Treepie that has only ever been spotted in more northern tropical areas.
Special tours are available for both of these locations.
