Currency and Traveler's Cheques

Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the official currency in Vietnam. Presently, ten different denominations of bank notes are used, starting from 100 VND, 200 VND, 500 VND, 1,000 VND, 2,000 VND, 5,000 VND, 10,000 VND, 20,000 VND, 50,000 VND and 100,000 VND.

Even though traveler’s cheques can be cashed at local banks, it is recommended to do it in major tourist cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. Generally, American dollars can be exchanged for local currency at banks, foreign exchange agencies and 3 and 4 star hotels throughout the country. Tourists can also change the money back to US dollars at the exchange bureau at the airports in some cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh.

Major credit cards such as American Express, VISA and MasterCard are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops in many tourist cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Danang, Halong Bay, Nha Trang, Mui Ne, Hue, Hoi An and Phan Thiet.

Currently, one US dollar is approximately 16,000 VND. However, please check the currency exchange rate again before you leave your country.
