Exotic escapade in the jungle
The geography of the northern Thailand consists of mountain range covered with dense forests. These lush green mountains are the source of waterfalls and rivers of which 4 major rivers merge at Nakornsawan province to become Chao Phraya River, the most significant river that is crucial to the agriculture, particularly rice, of the central region of Thailand. Not only the origin of rivers these forested terrains serve as the perfect site for an adventurous trip such as trekking, biking and rafting. The trip starts in Chiang Mai Province, the second largest capital of Thailand and the gateway to the northern region. This ancient capital has the reputation for rich culture, beautiful landscape and scattering hill tribe villages.
The first day begins with a long trek on the mountain trail passing the orchards, a waterfall and a remote village of Hmong Pha Mieng. The trip opens an opportunity to stay overnight and mingle with ethnic minorities at ‘Lahu outpost’, the hill tribe style thatched house on the ridge overlooking the mountain valley. The best period to visit is winter, November to early February. However, different season offers different challenge and outlook.
On the next day the adventure includes a few hikes, an elephant ride in the jungle and water rafting on a scenic river. The long sweating day ends with a delicious dinner and overnight stay at the Lisu Lodge.
Lisu Lodge
Named after the hill tribe village called ‘Lisu’, settling nearby the lodge, Lisu Lodge is part of a project to conserve the natural heritage of hill tribes of northern Thailand. The lodge won awards and international acclaims.
During the tour, a family elder will guide you around the village to sample a portion of Lisu customs and culture. You will view the local shrine, admire the work of skilled silversmiths and marvel at fine embroidery work, and may be invited into someone's home for a cup of local tea. Lisu is one of the hill tribes that migrated from southern China and Tibet in the early 20th century.
As evening falls, the sounds of dancing and traditional music, strummed on banjos by Lisu villagers, echo around the village. An activity at Lisu Lodge includes a bicycle ride up and down the hill and a wild ride tour on an oxcart.
