About the Package

River of Kings
Reverently referred to as the "River of Kings," the mighty Chao Phraya River has nurtured Thailand's growth for centuries and remains today the nation's main artery for water transportation and internal trade. A confluence of the Ping and Nan Rivers, the Chao Phraya stretches 230-km beyond Bangkok, emptying into the Gulf of Thailand.

Sailing Back in Time
An ideal way to become acquainted with Thailand's legendary past and recount Thailand's great cultural heritage and history, is aboard the Mekhala, a 35-year-old rice barge converted into a floating boutique hotel sporting modern on-board accommodations. Cruising upstream towards Ayuthaya, passing famous landmarks along the way, the concrete scenes of Bangkok are gradually replaced by tranquil scenes of a rural riverbank.

Bang Pa-in Summer Palace
The Bang Pa-in Palace is one of the country's most famous attractions, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Ayuthaya Province. This palatial complex, built in the reign of King Rama V, served as a royal summer residence. The most striking feature of the palace is Phra Thinang Aisawan Thipha-at, a Thai pavilion situated in the middle of a lake, regarded by many as one of the finest examples of Thai architecture. Royal buildings scattered throughout the compound were constructed in a variety of contrasting modes, dominated by Chinese, Italian and Victorian architectural styles. Unfortunately, the only building open to visitors is the Chinese-style Phra Thinang Wehat Chamrun, which houses the court.

Ancient Ayuthaya
Founded in 1350 AD, Thailand's former capital of Ayuthaya and the country's past splendor for 417 glorious years, was home to 33 kings before being left in ruins following a Burmese invasion in 1767. The city boasted three palace complexes and 400 temples along a 60-km stretch of canal. Art and architecture of the ancient city of Ayuthaya is a continuation of older Sukhothai Buddhist styles, blended with present-day Khmer-Hindu styles as revealed through several outstanding archeological sites, temples and museums.
