The Mekong Delta:
Formed by the deposition of the multiple tentacles and tributaries of Mekong River which run from Tibetan highland passing through China, Myanmar, (parts of) Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and flow out into the South China Sea in southern Vietnam. The Vietnamese call this area Cuu Long which means Nine Dragons for the nine mouths of the river that terminate the flow as it is absorbed by the sea. Today, this region is one of the country’s highest rice corps producers as well as for fruits and vegetables.
The Delta, in the ancient time, was an ancient Khmer territory and mostly marshland and forest. Canals were built and a system of transportation was implemented in the maze of water ways in the area when the Nguyen Lords took over this region. The Delta is known for the vast rice fields and the huge plantations and also known for the miles and miles of waterways crisscrossing through the land making this area both fertile and unique.
The people living in the Mekong Delta make their living as farmers and fishermen and built their home from whatever materials found varies from place to place. Along the river and canals, many homes have fishing nets and other typical fishing tools ready to use in front of their homes. Life of the people living in the delta is tightly woven with rivers and waterways as daily activities and businesses are conducted on its banks. Markets, stores, ship yards, repair shops are some of the more popular trades in this area.
Since the people live by the river, of course, their market is also float in the river. The floating markets are held every morning from 5:00 to about 11:00. and is the lively spot to take pictures of the life along the mighty Mekong river. Boats and sampans loaded with vegetables and tropical fruits fresh from their farms can be seen every where. Buyers and sellers are local and the buyers snapping everything by the bushels and resell them in the market with a handsome profit margin.
Can Tho Can Tho is 170 km from Saigon and was given the title of Western Capital since the beginning, and also be the meeting point of the various waterways of the Mekong Delta and make the land the most fertile. At present, the city has become an industrious center of the Delta region with over 220,000 inhabitants. Cai Rang floating market is one of the big floating market in the Mekong Delta region and worth to visit.
Chau Doc Chau Doc is the last town in Vietnam before entering Cambodia; locates on the right bank of Hau Giang, 5 km away from Sam Mountain, the highest point on the Delta. The mountain is also a sacred site for many locals as it is the site of many pagodas and temples.
Similar to other border towns in Southeast Asia, the town is busy with heavy illegal goods trading crossing the Cambodian border. Think twice before you buy one!
