| Nakorn Phanom
Sitting adjacent to the majestic Maekhong River, 735 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, Nakorn Phanom is surrounded by a range of mountains that stretch across Mekhong River to Lao - that is why the city is also known as the city
of mountains.
As a neighboring city of Thakaek, a city southern of Lao, Nakorn Phanom is a mixture of Lao and other ethnic groups that migrated across the Maekhong River centuries ago as shown local dialects, customs and cuisine. There are many ancient religious monuments in Nakorn Phanom but the most highly revered is Pra Thad Phanom Shrine in Thad Phanom District. Built around the tenth century in Khmer style, the shrine houses the Buddha’s relic and several thousand precious items – one of which is the shrine’s golden parasol found after the partial collapse in 1975. The shrine was restored and finished in 1979. The celebration of the shrine is held in February every year with thousands of worshipers in the neighboring area flocking to pay homage to the shrine and take part in other religious ceremonies. |
