Although Kanchanaburi has been widely known locally for its lush green landscapes and, of course, the historical Death Railway Bridge, only a handful of people have actually visited this province comparing to other famous beach destinations. Indeed, this is where historical events took place and the wildlife still takes control of the jungle. With a vast area of 19,486 square kilometers, it offers a wide variety of attractions and activities. Perhaps the most visited places in Kanchanaburi are the historical River Kwai Bridge and World War II memorial parks and museum in the town center. These two sites have been regularly well maintained and never ceased to draw tourists from all over the world. However, the real thrill awaits you in the jungle. A site of two major rivers, scenic waterfalls, reservoirs, caves, historical parks, hill tribe villages, venerated temples and huge national parks, to name but a few, it surely takes more than a week to explore the entire landscape.
Kanchanaburi is by no means suitable only for backpackers or adventurers: in fact, it can be a perfect alternative weekend getaway for all ages, only 2 hour drive from Bangkok. Our itinerary includes a train ride on the “Death Railway” to watch picturesque views of Kwai River, a boat ride on Kwai Noi River and a visit to Lava Cave, known for its several big chambers with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. You will stop by Mon hill tribe village and watch cultural performance of these self-sufficient villagers – the area is not only the residence of this ethnic minority but also a wildlife sanctuary of exotic plants, species of birds and fresh water fishery.
RV Cruise Ship
The RV River Kwai, the first inland cruise ship in Thailand, is a newly built colonial style river cruiser based on designs used by the original Irrawaddy Flotilla which was founded in Burma in 1865 and by the 1920s was the largest privately owned fleet of ships in the world. The RV River Kwai carries a maximum of 20 passengers in 10 teakwood cabins (single deck) and operates on a 4 days/3 nights year round.
