Thailand - Thailand: Where the Gem World Comes to Trade
Thailand: Where the Gem World Comes to Trade

Gems and jewellery, along with rice and electronic components, are one of Thailand’s biggest export earners. Traders come from all over the world to buy and sell rubies, sapphires, emeralds, smaller-sized diamonds, and countless semiprecious stones.

Ironically, most of the country’s domestic mines petered out some years ago, though there are still a couple of places, such as Kanchanaburi, producing lower grade sapphires and some rubies. Thailand’s neighbors however – Myanmar and Cambodia in particular -- still enjoy a substantial output, but lack the political stability and expertise to handle the cutting and the marketing, leaving Thailand to dominate the trade.

Tucked away in the business district on Silom Road and environs are countless small cutting centers where expert handlers heat rough stones to improve their color. They grind them into the prized glittering gems that eventually find their way into jewelry that is sold in shops all over the world – including along Silom Road.

Though it’s an open secret that a substantial portion of precious stones are smuggled in and out of the country – mostly in dealers’ pockets – buying in Thailand can mean fewer middlemen and export taxes, and thus a lower price than back home. There are definitely bargains to be had here, and it is worth considering a purchase – as long as you stick to reputable dealers doing business on the main roads. (See other stories in this section for more details about buying gems and jewelry.)
