Ancient Empire
The all-conquering Cambodian Empire of Angkor, which encompassed present-day Lao, Vietnam and Thailand, dominated the 9th-14th centuries. The heart of this civilization was Angkor, resplendent with scores of magnificent temples, grand pagodas and the ancient capital of Angkor Thom. The Angkor complex, close to the modern Cambodian town of Siem Reap, is one of the world's great archeological wonders. Today, it symbolizes the national identity of the Khmer people and centuries of a prosperous and unrivalled culture.

Angkor Revisited
Visitors are amazed at the scale of Angkor. The complex covers around 400 square kilometers and comprises over 100 monuments and edifices of temples, sculptures, statues and incomparable bas relief that have withstood the ravages of time. The culminating point of the Khmer Empire was the 12th century under the reigns of Suryavarman II (1113-1150), accredited with building Angkor Wat, and Jayavaraman VII (1181-1281), who founded Angkor Thom. At the fall of the Empire, the jungle reclaimed the decaying ruins until rediscovered in 1861.

Center of the Universe
To this day, a strong sense of history, grandeur and mystery from an ancient civilization permeates ancient sites within the Angkor compound, the most notable being Angkor Wat. Built in perfect symmetry, this five-peak temple mountain is an architectural representation of Hindu cosmology. The central tower corresponds to Mount Meru - center of the universe - while the shrine at the top is home to the gods. This great five-peaked summit is the city of Brahma, dividing the world of man and gods. The impeccable bas relief craftsmanship recounts scenes from Indian mythical epics and warfare during the Angkor period. Most famous is the carving "Churning of the Ocean of Milk," by demons and gods, which, according to Hindu mythology generates the elixir of life.

Angkor Capital
Occupying pride of place in the 11th-century Angkor Empire was the once-celebrated capital of Angkor Thom protected by a 100-meter wide, 12-kilometer long moat. Today, its magnificent temples and pagodas have succumbed to the jungle.

Bayon
The eeriness and mystery that looms over Angkor Thom is enhanced even more by the hazy appearance of Bayon with its carved heads of Jayavaraman VII (accredited for constructing the city) jutting from the top of the building. Each of the 54 towers surrounding the edifice depict smiling faces of the king portrayed as Boddhisattva Avalokitesvara (Buddha), which may appear somewhat ominous to modern eyes.

Sculptured Terraces
Bayon leads to the royal grounds and the 300-meter long Elephant Terrace and Leper King Terrace, each magnificently decorated with sculptures and bas relief of mythical garuda (half-man, half-bird), nagas (serpents), demons, gods and other creatures from Hindu mythology. These barren terraces once housed the pavilions of Khmer kings.

South of the royal grounds, the Baphuon monument has three large, elevated terraces that can be reached via raised pathways supported by pillars. Each panel illustrates outstanding carvings of Indian mythos.

Beyond Angkor Thom
It takes three days to tour the Angkor complex. Beyond Angkor Thom are even more magnificent edifices such as Prasat Kravan, Neak Pean, Preah Khun and Ta Phrom; the latter two admired for their romantic status. Ta Phrom is in its original state - unrestored since being rediscovered.

Citadel of the Women
Banteay Srei, (Citadel of the Women), built in 967 from intricately carved pink sandstone, lies 32 kilometers from Angkor and is enveloped by jungle. Unlike Angkor, it occupies a single-level terrace with shrines; one shrine is dedicated to Shiva, the other to Vishnu.

The Great Lake
Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, Cambodia's Tonle Sap is a major lifeline for millions of folk in this region of agrarian and fishing communities. Called "The Great Lake," Tonle Sap supports numerous floating fishing villages. Apart from catfish, murrel, climbing perch and gourami, the lake sustains a large carp-breeding and carp-harvesting industry, along with fish-eating waterfowl and other species of birds.
