Known now as the Roof of the World, Tibet or Xizang in Chinese only emerged in the travel map at the very beginning of the 20th century. Since then, it is perceived as mystical land with awesome landscape and exotic culture. Its majestic scenery, religious culture, and wonderful people have lured a number of lucky tourists for the past decade.
Tibet is an autonomous region that has borders with India, Burma, Bhutan, Sikkim, and Nepal. Located in the west end of China, Tibet sits on a massive plateau surrounded by mountain ranges; the Himalaya to the south, the Karakoram to the west, and the Kunlun to the north. It has an average height of 4,000 meters above sea level, covering some of the world's highest peaks with more than 30 mountains higher than 7,000 meters (22,960 feet). It is haven for mountaineers and adventurers. More than 40 snow capped peaks are open to mountain climbing enthusiasts. Geographically, it is the cradle of some of China’s great rivers like the Yangtze, Yellow River, Nu River (Salween), Lancang River (Mekong), Yarlong Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), Indus, and Ganges.
Due to its accessibility, most tourists start their trip at its capital Lhasa. The city boosts many religious edifices including Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery and Ganden Monastery. Other attractions around Lhasa include Lake Manasarova in Ngari and the world’s largest canyon Yarlong Tsangpo in the south.
Tibetan people
Most Tibetans are farmers scattering in small villages. Those who live in the cities make a living as a craftsman or work in businesses. The roaming nomads earned their living by herding yaks and sheep.
Most Tibetans are devout Buddhists while some believe in Bon, Islam and Catholicism. Tibetans are optimistic and happy people. Among 2.7 million population in Tibet are Tibetans - who the majority population - Menpa, Luopa, Han Chinese, Hui, Sherpa, and Deng people.
