Thailand’s limited rail network stretches to the major regions, providing wonderful views along the way. The service is cheap, generally reliable and comfortable if you are not in 3rd class on 'ordinary' or 'rapid' trains. If you travel from Bangkok to the north, northeast or south, take an express train. On these, your options are 2nd class (with bus-like seats), 2nd class sleeper (with fans and pull-down beds), and 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper (this requires warm clothing). First-class carriages contain single or double private cabins with numerous home comforts. All sleeping berths have clean sheets, blankets and pillowcases, with curtains for privacy. The buffet car serves good food and drinks.
Bangkok’s Hualamphong Station is the central terminus for long distance trains. You can book tickets here, at smaller stations throughout the country, or through travel agents in Bangkok. Bookings are difficult around holidays, so plan ahead.
