Getting to Siem Reap

Siem Reap airport IBy planes
Currently, there is no direct flight connecting Siem Reap with cities in Europe or America. All of the tourists are required to have a layover in one of Cambodia’s neighboring countries before proceeding to Siem Reap.

From Thailand, Bangkok Airways has four daily flights that leave Bangkok at various times – its first morning flight departs at 7:30 am and the last flight flies at 7 pm. Flying time is about 45 minutes. Travelers from Singapore can choose between Silk Air and Jet Star Asia. The former has regular flights that leave the Lion City every day while the latter operates on a 3 days-a-week basis.

If you want to start from Malaysia, Air Asia (one of Southeast Asia’s leading budget airlines) and Malaysia Airlines will take you to Angkor in about 1 hour. In Hong Kong, Cambodia’s national carrier Siem Reap Airways has 3 flights a week that connect with both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Alternatively, two closer neighbors like Vietnam and Laos offers an alternative route. Vietnam Airlines has numerous flights from its major cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. However, the northern neighbor of Laos sees its own national airline Lao Airlines flying directly from its major tourist cities such as Vientiane, Luang Phrabang and Pakse. At the same time, the far away neighbor Korea has Asiana Airways that offer multiple flights from Seoul to Siem Reap.

Note: flying times vary on different periods. Please check with your travel agent about the schedule of each airline.

By road
The best way to travel overland to Siem Reap is to start from Thailand. The 465 km road trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap offers picturesque scenes of Cambodia and Thailand’s countryside.

Many backpackers buy cheap bus tickets that leave Bangkok early in the morning. They are later dropped at the Thailand/ Cambodia border checkpoint town of Aranyaprathet (also known as Poipet town in the Cambodian side) for immigration procedure before taking another bus or taxi to Siem Reap. The whole trip lasts about 10 hours. The journey is considerable cheap but travelers are susceptible to scams. A number of passengers are deserted by some bus companies at the border or taken through different routes, causing a delay to their destination.

To avoid this to ruin your holiday, it is recommended that you contact a reliable travel agency in Bangkok. Some travel company provides a tour that includes private transportation from Bangkok to Siem Reap, tours, a guide and accommodations. Even though it is a bit more expensive, it is more convenient and safer this way.
