Ca Mau
Ca Mau is the last province on the southern tip of the Mekong Delta, 360 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City. The majority of the population in this province is Kinh and Khmer people -Vietnam’s current prime minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, was born and raised here.
This small town of 10,000 populations is blessed with fertile land, network of canals and natural resources from the sea and in the forest. It is famous for verdant mangrove forests and bird sanctuary. Thus, it is an ideal place for eco tourism since it is virtually free from mass tourism.
U Minh Forest is a mangrove forest that covers most of Ca Mau Province. The forest is comprised of swamps of leggy mangrove trees, animals, insects and other micro organisms. The ecosystem here is the best in Vietnam. It is also home to a large number of tropical birds that can be spotted in Ngoc Hien Bird and Dau Roi bird sanctuary.
Unfortunately Mekhong Delta is a good breading ground for mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season. Make sure you bring insect repellent with you when travelling to this region.
The best way to go to Camau is by bus or car from Mien Tay bus station in Ho Chi Minh – Ca Mau is about 179 kilometres south of Can Tho. The Ho Chi Minh – Ca Mau trip by express bus takes about 8 hours. Currently, there are one 3 star hotel and several small hotels in Ca Mau town. The best time to visit Ca Mau is during the dry season, which begins from November to April.
